{"id":1362,"date":"2018-03-30T14:48:58","date_gmt":"2018-03-30T14:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/?p=1362"},"modified":"2025-02-12T01:45:36","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T01:45:36","slug":"winners-of-the-literary-contest-keys-to-the-future-of-palestine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/ar\/news\/winners-of-the-literary-contest-keys-to-the-future-of-palestine","title":{"rendered":"Winners of the literary contest: &#8220;Keys to the future of Palestine&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Palestinians mark Land Day with the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.palinfo.com\/news\/2018\/3\/25\/Activist-March-of-Return-response-to-US-Israeli-policies\">Great March of Return<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Freedom Flotilla Coalition is thrilled to announce the winners of its first literary competition, Keys for the Future of Palestine, honouring poets and authors from around the world, in three languages; Arabic, English and Spanish. Our jurors for each of those languages had the daunting task of selecting winners and runners up in the categories of short story and poetry.\u00a0You can see the names of winning contributors and their works below. Keep visiting our site over the coming days as we publish their texts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the adjudicated submissions, we received an impressive and moving collection of stories from children at Al Aqsa school in Lenasia, South Africa (Extension 5 and 10) &#8211; special thanks to their teacher, Ismail Mohammed. These children, many of whom have family members who suffered the devastating effects of living in an Apartheid state, have expressed themselves beautifully with their powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/south-african-childrens-submissions\">words<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We received 29 submissions in English. The literary jury for the English language submissions included Naomi Wallace, Sumayya Lee, and Monia Mazigh (<a href=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/news\/jury-for-the-english-language-keys-to-the-future-of-palestine-literary-contest\">biographies<\/a>). They selected as the winning short story <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/literary-contest\/salaam-it-means-peace\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salaam, It Means Peace<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Mikayla Boorany of South Africa, and as runner up <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May I Show You My City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Dan Lieberman (USA). In the poetry category they selected <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poem(s) for Palestine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Gerry Sloan from the USA as the winner, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Year 2037<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Anna D\u00f3ra Antonsd\u00f3ttir of Iceland as runner-up. Jury member Naomi Wallace commented: \u201cIt has been both an education and an honour to be a judge for this competition. These poems and short stories give one inspiration not only in this struggle for a more just world, but in reclaiming imagination to speak truth to power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The jury for submissions in Spanish, which included Marga Clark, Valent\u00ed G\u00f3mez-Oliver, Charo Fierro and Fernando Garc\u00eda Burillo, see details <a href=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/es\/news\/jury-literary-contest\">here<\/a>, judged 48 works.\u00a0They awarded the first prize to the story\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/literary-contest\/weekly-diary-of-a-child-who-was-not-allowed-to-be-a-child\"><i>Diario semanal de un ni\u00f1o al que no dejaron ser ni\u00f1o<\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<em>Weekly<\/em> d<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iary of a child who was not allowed to be a child<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by Yusra el Kasmy el Kasmi from Catalunya and of Moroccan origin. The runner-up prize went to the poem <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/es\/literary-contest\/para-ahuyentar-a-los-cuervos\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Para ahuyentar a los cuervos<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Scare the crows away<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by Marieta Machado Batista from Cuba. They awarded a second runner-up prize to the poem <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/es\/literary-contest\/en-memoria-de-gaza\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En memoria de Gaza<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Memory of Gaza<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Montes Presa of Asturias, Spain. Full jury notes on each of these works can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rumboagaza.org\/jurado-de-las-obras-en-castellano-del-concurso-literario-llaves-para-un-futuro-digno\/\">here<\/a> in Spanish<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Arabic, we received 186 short stories and 168 poems. We will announce the winners of these competitions over the coming days, when we receive the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decis<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1387 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/right-of-return-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/right-of-return-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/sgf.freedomflotilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/right-of-return.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/>ions from those juries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quality of submissions was exceptional and we thank all who submitted their work and who bravely spoke out against the illegal blockade of Gaza: we are considering ways we can honour more of the submissions in another publication. Art and literature are important ways that we can express the injustices that Palestinians experience every day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we prepare for our Freedom Flotilla sailing in May, we keep in mind the words of Naomi Wallace, playwright &amp; jury member: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe dream of breaking the blockade continues with real boats and real hearts and minds that do not give up.
