Oswald Avijo Coy is a fisherman and city council member in Caimanera, a fishing village on Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He met Ann Wright of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition during her visit to Guantánamo for a conference on the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases. Mr. Avijo Coy told Ann that he is in solidarity with the fishers of Gaza, as his fishing port is under occupation also–by the U.S. military at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo, that the U.S. has possessed for over 117 years. Mr. Avijo Coy, who has been a fisherman for over 40 years, says he has heard of what the Israelis do to the fishers of Gaza–and stands in solidarity with them.
